The role

The Head of MBD will report to the Managing Partner and play a leading role in:

  • Developing and overseeing the firm’s MBD strategy
  • Managing the MBD team to ensure they are appropriately developed and support delivery of the firm’s business strategy
  • Overseeing the MBD budget, ensuring it continually delivers the required business benefit
  • Playing an active role in winning work for the firm, leading on new and existing initiatives via occasional client contact and third parties
  • Identifying, developing and implementing value-adding marketing campaigns that both raise the firm’s profile and assist the firm in winning new work
  • Inspiring and supporting individual lawyers to develop and action their own BD plans
  • Providing incisive and value-adding marketing support to all  lawyers in the firm
  • Reporting progress on key initiatives to the firm’s senior management – making recommendations where required

Key responsibilities

Ensuring a best practice approach is taken with respect to the firm’s key marketing communications activities including:

  • Organising and managing directory submissions, to improve the firm’s ranking in all relevant areas
  • Ensuring all firm events and corporate hospitality are delivered to a high standard
  • Overseeing and developing the firm’s marketing presence on relevant social media sites e.g. Twitter and LinkedIn
  • Developing and managing the firm’s website, recommending improvements as required.
  • Reviewing and updating appropriate marketing collateral – including newsletters, briefings, brochures and capability statements
  • Managing all tender processes and collating a central hub of responses
  • Actively managing all press relations, encouraging and co-ordinating contributions to publications
  • Identifying, encouraging and organising speaking engagements, as well as sponsorship of appropriate industry events, to ensure the best use of budgets and an appropriate return on investment
  • Producing and policing relevant policies as required

Supporting the partnership across the full range of business development and marketing activities:

  • Leading client initiatives by actively interacting with new and existing clients – including drafting pitches for new work and initiatives with key clients
  • Developing the firm’s approach to CRM and playing an active role alongside the partnership in managing all key networking relationships
  • Supporting cross-selling across the firm, by promoting partners and fee earners to existing contacts, as appropriate
  • Taking a lead role in targeting, advising on how to build relationships and making approaches to new contacts
  • Identify potential new domestic and international sources of work and developing strategies for penetrating new markets
  • Maintaining and developing existing networks, ensuring all activities are captured on InterAction
  • Attending and advising on all appropriate BD events, including corporate entertainment

Advising partners and lawyers on client development activity and facilitating activities to develop their practices. This is achieved through:

  • Building positive relationships across the firm
  • Regular interaction with partners and lawyers to support them to identify and pursue opportunities from new and existing clients in an effective and timely manner
  • Developing a strong understanding of the firm’s practice areas and utilising this knowledge to good effect
  • Developing an excellent knowledge of appropriate domestic and international markets, using that knowledge to the firm’s advantage and in discussion with the firm’s lawyers
  • Playing an active role in the development, promotion and sharing of best practice
  • Attending partner and management meetings as required, to report progress and lessons learned – making recommendations where required

The person

We seek a highly motivated and impactful individual with demonstrable experience of business development, marketing, events and public relations work. In addition to a strong academic record, the individual requires extensive experience of working at a similar level within the legal sector. They should have proven strategic and managerial skills, tenacity and highly developed interpersonal skills. Strong organisational and project management skills are essential and the individual should also be willing to travel, often at short notice.

The successful candidate must also be able to:

  • Communicate effectively with people at all levels
  • Lead by example and work collaboratively as a team player, as required
  • Play an active role in developing, promoting and sharing BD best practice
  • Develop a thorough understanding of our practice areas and potential market sectors within a short time frame
  • Work calmly under pressure, be able to juggle multiple tasks and meet tight and often shifting deadlines

  • Excellent IT skills, including proficiency in MS Office and ideally iManage (document management system) and InterAction (CRM system) experience
